Central Government Exams 2026: Complete List, Eligibility, Salary, and Which One to Target First

There are over 50 central government exams in India — SSC, UPSC, banking, railways, defence, and more. Each has its own eligibility, syllabus, and career path. If you are trying to figure out where to start, you are not alone.

This article cuts through the noise. You will know which exam matches your qualification, what the actual salary looks like after selection, and which one makes sense to prepare for right now in 2026.

One thing I tell every student who walks into a counselling session: the exam is not the problem. Picking the wrong one — or trying to prepare for three at once — is.

1. India has 50+ central government exams — SSC, UPSC, banking, railways, defence, and more.
2. You can start as early as 10th pass (RRB Group D, SSC MTS) or wait until graduation (SSC CGL, IBPS PO, UPSC IAS).
3. Salary range is wide: SSC MTS pays around Rs. 18,000/month to start; IAS officers can cross Rs. 1,00,000 in total emoluments.
4. SSC CHSL (12th pass) and IBPS Clerk (graduate) are the most crackable exams for first-time aspirants.
5. Six months is enough for one exam. Trying to prepare for three at once guarantees you clear none.

A central government exam is a recruitment test run by a central authority — UPSC, SSC, IBPS, RRB, or a central ministry — to hire people for jobs under the Government of India. State government exams are separate. Each state has its own Public Service Commission for that.

Finishing Class 12 and wanting a government job right away is more realistic than most families think. Central government exams after 12th without a degree cover some of the most applied-for tests in the country.

So, Which One Should a 12th Pass Student Go For?

SSC CHSL is the most practical bet for someone who wants a desk job in a government ministry. Posts like Lower Division Clerk, Data Entry Operator, and Postal Assistant fall under this. Pay level is 4 or 5 under the 7th Pay Commission — not spectacular, but stable and promotable.

If you have PCM and are physically fit, NDA is worth chasing. The in-service salary after training is Rs. 56,100 at the basic level — but the real value is the career trajectory, not the starting figure. Just know the selection rate is below 1%, so half-hearted preparation will not cut it.

Graduation is where the real choices open up. Central government exams after graduation in India span every stream — arts, commerce, science, engineering. Stream does not disqualify you from most exams. That is the part students from tier 2 cities often get wrong.

Arts graduates have the widest access. UPSC IAS, SSC CGL, IBPS PO, and SBI PO all take any graduation stream. If your optionals were Political Science, History, or Geography, your UPSC preparation already has a built-in advantage — use it.

Engineers have options most other streams do not. UPSC ESE (Engineering Services Exam) opens Group A technical roles. GATE scores are your gateway to PSUs — ONGC, BHEL, GAIL — where salaries run from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 80,000/month with perks on top.

ISRO Scientist/Engineer is worth mentioning but be realistic — vacancies are few and competition is stiff. Target it as an aspirational goal alongside a more achievable primary exam.

PCB students often feel lost after 12th if NEET does not work out. It should not be that way. SSC CHSL and SSC MTS are open to science students. If you clear 12th with a decent score, your general awareness and science sections in these exams are already half-done.

For PCM students, beyond NDA, consider Indian Navy SSR and Air Force Group X/Y — both are solid entry points into government service right out of school.

Central government salary comes in two parts: basic pay and allowances — DA, HRA, TA. What you actually take home depends on your posting city. Here are the real numbers:

A note on IAS salary: the basic pay figure understates the actual package. An IAS officer posted in a metro city takes home significantly more once HRA (24% of basic in metro cities) and other allowances are factored in. The non-monetary perks — housing, transport, staff — are substantial and not captured in any salary table.

“Easiest” depends on where you are right now. But based on syllabus difficulty, vacancies, and realistic cutoffs, here is an honest ranking:

• India Post GDS: No written exam. Selection is based on 10th board marks alone. For students in states where GDS cutoffs are below 80%, this is a genuine shortcut.
• SSC MTS: Basic maths, reasoning, general awareness. No interview. Many candidates clear it with 3-4 months of preparation.
• SSC CHSL: Tier 1 is a 60-minute computer-based test. Manageable syllabus. 4-5 months of focused study is enough for most candidates.
• IBPS Clerk: Banking exam with a syllabus almost identical to SSC — reasoning, English, quant, general awareness. Runs every year with large vacancies.
• RRB Group D: 10th pass eligibility, no interview stage. The 2025 cycle released 1,03,769 vacancies — one of the largest in recent years.

If you scored above 80% in 10th boards and are from a smaller state, check GDS cutoffs before anything else. Many students overlook it because it sounds “too simple” — but a government job is a government job.

Do not split your preparation between UPSC and IBPS. Pick one. With a graduation degree and 6 months ahead of you, SSC CHSL or IBPS Clerk are both achievable. The syllabi are predictable. Quality mock tests are available for free or close to free on Testbook and Oliveboard.

In 6 months, 5 hours of study daily is enough for SSC CHSL from scratch. First 2 months: build concepts. Final 4 months: only previous year papers and mocks. Review every wrong answer the same day — not tomorrow, not on weekends. The same day.

NEET not working out does not mean government job doors are closed. It means you pivot — and science students often pivot well. Your general awareness preparation and science sections in SSC and railway exams are already stronger than most arts or commerce candidates.

SSC CHSL, SSC MTS, and RRB NTPC are all open to you right after 12th. Once you finish graduation, IBPS PO and SSC CGL join the list. I have seen PCB students from Rajasthan and UP clear IBPS Clerk within 8-10 months of focusing entirely on banking preparation. The transition is harder psychologically than it is academically.

I get this question from parents more than students. The answer is banking — IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk, or SBI PO. Fixed hours (mostly 10 to 5), safe posting cities, maternity leave, and women’s reservation in many banks. It is not just the salary that matters here — it is the practicality.

SSC CGL Inspector posts — Central Excise, Income Tax — are a strong second choice. Location preferences during posting are available and the work profile suits students who want some variety in a desk job.

For those aiming higher, UPSC IAS deserves mention. In UPSC CSE 2024, women accounted for 328 of the top 1000 candidates on the merit list. The ceiling has moved significantly in the last five years.
