Most students think architecture requires JEE Paper 2. It does not. NATA — the National Aptitude Test in Architecture, conducted by the Council of Architecture — is the primary entrance for BArch at most colleges in India. JEE Paper 2 is only one of several accepted routes.

Eligibility: 12th PCM with 60% marks. Must pass a medical fitness test. Age limit is generally 17-25 years for DNS and B.Sc Nautical Science programs.

Entrance: IMU CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test). Conducted by IMU Chennai. Also accepted by several maritime academies: MERI Kolkata, Tolani Maritime Institute.

Courses: B.Sc Nautical Science (3 years), Marine Engineering (4 years), or Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS, 1 year + 18 months sea training).

Salary: Junior officer (Third Officer): Rs 50,000-1.2 lakh per month. Chief Officer: Rs 2-3.5 lakh per month. Captain: Rs 4-6 lakh per month. All figures tax-free during sea posting.

The lifestyle is unconventional — 4-6 months at sea, then leave ashore. For students who are comfortable with that structure, this is one of the fastest routes to a very high income from a 12th PCM background.

This section matters especially for students in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, where government employment carries real weight — financially and socially. PCM opens several strong government doors.

NDA is open to 12th PCM students (PCB also for Navy). It is a Union Public Service Commission exam held twice a year. Successful candidates join the Army, Navy, or Air Force after a 3-year training programme at Pune. Starting pay after commissioning is around Rs 56,100 per month under 7th Pay Commission Level 10, with allowances taking total CTC to Rs 9-12 LPA equivalent.
